It may be Halloween but this week's release list is no shocker, with Fallout 3 and the James Bond tie-in with the silly name, Quantum of Solace leading the pack. The UK also gets its grubby little mitts on Manhunt 2, Red Alert 3 and the highly anticipated Carnival Funfair Games: Mini Golf. Don't forget to hop inside and see what other games are worth your pennies.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Fallout 3 – Bethesda (360, PS3, PC)
Fallout’s rabid fan-base has been patiently waiting for a true sequel to the tactical RPG series for a decade, after spin-offs Fallout tactics and Brotherhood of Steel failed to match the originals. Black Isle Studios are no more so development reins have been handed to Bethesda, and seeing as they are responsible for the Elder Scrolls games it looks like Fallout is in good hands. Fallout 3’s story takes place in 2277, 30 years after the last game, in a world ravaged by a nuclear war 200 years earlier. You’ll need to search through this wasteland for your missing Father, while fighting off hoards of mutated nasties and other scavengers.

Valkyria Chronicles – Sega (PS3)
Sega doesn’t have much luck when it comes to new IP outside the arcade market - just look at Skies of Arcadia, Rez or NiGHTS. All highly acclaimed, all largely ignored by the public. Hopefully the same won’t happen to Valkyria Chronicles, a new strategy game that combines top-down tactics with real-time shooting elements. As unique as the gameplay sounds its nothing compared to the visual style Sega have employed – the graphics engine makes the game look like a moving watercolour painting and is breathtaking in motion. This deserves to be a big success so if you have a PS3 and want a decent strategy game, then you should really consider investing in this.

My Sims Kingdoms – EA (Wii, DS)
EA’s cutesy house-building and people simulator gets a medieval makeover for its sequel. The original featured an intuitive and versatile creation tool (which was used as a basis for Boom Blox’s level editors) but was severely lacking in stuff to do outside building houses and creating custom furniture for each Sim. Kingdoms has been fleshed out to provide a bigger variety of tasks and now has proper storyline to keep you interested. This should appeal to younger gamers, and any older ones with a creative thirst just dying to be quenched (but can’t be arsed to wait for Little Big Planet).

James Bond 007: Quantum of Solace – Activision (360, PS3, Wii, DS, PS2, PC)
James Bond promised he’d return but after so many years in the gaming wilderness isn’t he going to be a bit rusty? This is Activision’s first game since they picked up the licence from EA, but early reports suggest Bond may have benefitted from a few extra months at the training camp. This game includes some levels based on Casino Royale alongside Solace’s revenge-led story and takes you to such exotic climes as Italy, Haiti and Austria in search of the mysterious Dominic Greene and his band of modern day terrorists. Solace’s first-person shooting will be interspersed with third-person action scenes and some quick-time events, just to keep you on your toes.

Manhunt 2 – Take Two (Wii, PSP, PS2)
It’s been so long since the furore surrounding Take Two’s original battle to get this released that it’s hard to imagine what all the fuss was about. What’s that? It’s a third person action game where you get to stalk enemies and ‘execute’ them in ways so gory they would make David Cronenberg a bit queasy? Oh. Anyway, UK gamers will now be able to sample the delights of one of the most controversial games of all time, and there ain’t a single thing Jack Thompson can do to stop you.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 – EA (PC)
EA resurrects the fantastic Cold War-themed C&C series after eight years. The axis and allies from before are joined by a third faction this time around, based on Imperial Japan.
The Red Alert series has never taken itself seriously and thankfully number 3 is just as silly as before; alongside the blimps, anti-ship squids and dynamite-wielding Crazy Ivan units you can now send ninjas, psychic schoolgirls and armoured attack bears to conquer your enemies. Take that Stalin. The campaign mode now features a fully functioning co-op mode alongside the usual abundance of multiplayer skirmish goodness.
