Blockbuster is to close 72 of their 264 UK stores it was announced Monday, resulting in over 450 job losses.

The DVD and Videogame rental retailer re-entered administration last month, linked in part to increased competition from online streaming, direct-mail services and on-demand TV platforms.

The move, which comes just six-weeks before Christmas, will see the majority of the earmarked stores close over the course of the next week.

Speaking to Sky News administrators Moorfields Corporate Recovery said:

“This has not been an easy decision to make and we acknowledge that, with Christmas on the horizon, this will be extremely upsetting news to a large number of people most of all those affected by the store closures”

“We must reiterate that, as part of our attempts to turnaround the business, today’s decision is necessary if parts of Blockbuster are to be saved and a buyer found.”
