GTA V Boosts Asda & Tesco Entertainment Sales

Supermarkets ASDA and Tesco have both seen a massive boost in entertainment sales following the release of Grand Theft Auto V.

Tesco saw the largest increase in marketshare, with their share of the entertainment market, which includes videogames, increasing to 17.1% in the twelve weeks prior to 30th September. In comparison their share in the same period last year was 11.9% according to data from Kantar Worldpanel.

Fiona Keenan, strategic insight director for Kantar:

“The games market has grown by an impressive 29% compared with the same period last year. Tesco has been the biggest winner of the release of Grand Theft Auto V, collecting a third of all money spent on the title during the two weeks after it’s release.”

Asda’s share has seen a slight increase, growing from 9.8% to 12.1%, while Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s have both remained static at 6.9% and 2.9% respectively.

The sales boost has been no doubt helped by the special offers afforded by the supermarket chains and has played a large part in pushing the gaming market into growth for the first time in five years.
