Sony Santa Monica Studios have released a teaser trailer for the latest God of War game, dubbed God of War: Ascension. It doesn’t give anything in the way of gameplay but shows the famed anti-hero Kratos becoming bound with his signature double chained blades. A haunting female voice talks of “a time before Kratos became the monster known as the Ghost of Sparta” and “a time where something other than rage consumed him”. This sets it up as the first game in the series in terms of the franchise timeline.
We gave God of War III a solid 8 our of 10 in our review roughly two years ago, praising it for being a ‘seemingly perfect next generation God of War’ while at the same time feeling ‘more like a gentle evolution’ of previous games.
Developers Sony Santa Monica Studios have certainly got a serious weight on the shoulders to keep the experience fresh especially since God of War is once of Sony’s figurehead franchises. There have been plenty of rumours floating round the internet pointing towards the game bringing something new to the table especially with the possibility of online features, courtesy of a Senior Online Programmer advert placed in Gamasutra last year.
Could we see numerous Kratos’ battling it out online or is this more likely to be some form of online co-op for the story mode? These are all of course theories for now but if they bear any fruit then it could make for a very interesting title.
