UK Chart: PlayStation Vita Breathes Life Into Software Sales

Uncharted: Golden Abyss

The PlayStation Vita’s launch has created havoc across the UK All Format Top 40 this week, as Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football sit comfortably at the top, claiming 31% and 18% of Vita software sales respectively.

Rayman Origins has climbed from thirty-sixth to fifth with a huge 197% increase in sales, with thanks to the well-received Vita version. Wipeout 2048 is the Vita’s fourth best-selling launch title, landing at eleventh, with F1 2011, Ridge Racer and Virtua Tennis 4 all landing in the top thirty.

You might notice a distinct lack of Ubisoft titles, notably Lumines: Electronic Symphony, well, that might have something do with GAME’s banking troubles and their resulting inability to pay the publisher upfront for stock – resulting in several Ubisoft Vita titles not being present at GAME stores during launch.

Meanwhile, last week’s top dogs, UFC Undisputed 3 (a sales drop of 53%) and FIFA 12 drop to third and fourth respectively (yes, that is two FIFA titles in the top four). Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games has its run stopped short, as it falls back two places to sixth.

Those with fond memories of the the early nineties might remember Bullfrog’s 1993 tactical-shooter Syndicate; Electronic Arts brings the franchise back via Swedish developer Starbreeze in this busy launch window, a decision that leaves me puzzled. Nevertheless, Syndicate 2012 arrives at seventh place. Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 complete the top ten at eighth, ninth and tenth respectively.

Obsidian Entertainment’s Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition arrives at seventeenth as the definitive version of the 2010 post-apocalyptic adventure.

For the last release of the week, GAME strikes again, first cancelling customer pre-orders for Mistwalker’s The Last Story limited edition, then, hours from launch, pulling all copies completely from sale, including at Gamestation. Mistwalker, lead by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and responsible in part for Xbox 360 titles Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, should be pleased with a fifteenth place debut given the harsh launch conditions. It is difficult to tell where it could have finished under more positive circumstances.
